Teo Tzavaras Targets the HDX-Factor
The man in black is Teo Tzavaras. He has already completed one series of the X-factor, including the Final, to rave reviews. Apart from being a talented Steadicam operator, Teo comes complete with his own Gigawave 'Clip-on' wireless camera system, which he has recently upgraded to HD!
When Teo purchased his D-Cam 'Clip-on' systems, he opted for the SD version, as this suited the needs of him and his customers. However, earlier this year, he realised that he needed to upgrade to HD, if he was going to stay ahead of the game. Fortunately for Teo, he made the right decision when he chose Gigawave digital HD products. As an existing Gigawave customer, he was eligible to take advantage of the the Company's upgrade policy, which is both simple and inexpensive!

In addition to the 'Clip-on' system he uses for the X-Factor, Teo Tzavaras has a second system. Both were supplied by Panos Pierides of PTS Greece, Gigawave's agent in Greece and are available for hire when Teo is not using them.

Malta Budget 2010 Focuses on the Individual
Budget 2010 is a budget that focuses on the individual while priorities were identified to stimulate work and deal with problems arising from the difficult financial scenario, said Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi at a press conference after the budget speech. Economy, investment and finance minister Tonio Fenech (see photo) also addressed the media.
“This budget is not full of gimmicks, escapism or means to hide problems but provides solutions. We are directly investing in roads, the environment, Gozo, the self-employed, tourism, and other important sectors. Our feet are grounded to sustain competitiveness and reach higher levels of it while facing the future,” said Dr Gonzi.

Public Broadcasting Services, which covered Budget 2010, was also able to concentrate on individuals, in this case Tonio Fenech, thanks to their Gigawave 'Clip-on' wireless camera systems. According to Joseph Borg Xuereb, manager - Operations for Public Broadcasting Services, which covered Budget 2010:

'We had a good coverage and smooth running of the Budget specially in the signing of the budget by the President which was covered by the portable wireless camera and everyone was happy. And we ( the Maltese people) were happy because the budget was not that harsh. Only an increase in cigarettes taxes - thanks God!"

Race of Champions - Beijing (ROC)
Once again, Gigawave digital HD wireless camera systems were filming the action in the Bird's Nest Stadium, Beijing. Just over a year ago, it was the Games of the XXIX Olympiad. This time it was the final of the Race of Champions (ROC), which last year was held in the newly opened Wembly Stadium.
Every year The Race of Champions brings together the world’s best racers from rallying and racing, on two wheels and four, to answer the question: Who is the world’s fastest racer?

The concept is simple: using identical equipment, drivers compete head-to-head in heats on a parallel track, to prove they’re the greatest. They start alongside each other, race on exactly the same track, and finish side-by-side. Cars are swapped between heats so the racers have to prove themselves in a variety of vehicles in order to win.
The competitors love it as it’s a fun way to end the season – they’re not racing for sponsors, they’re not racing for next year’s drive – they’re racing just for their own glory, in front of a crowd of thousands. The crowd love it because they get to see the world’s greatest drivers fight it out in a unique battle in a stadium atmosphere.

Shocking Wins Leaving Crime Scene Behind!
With just 400 metres to go, it looked as though a British trained horse was finally going to win the Melbourne Cup, Australia's premier thoroughbred horse race. But, in the end, it was a locally trained horse, Shocking, that crossed the line three-quarters of a length ahead of Crime Scene, trained by Godolphin's Saeed bin Suroor in Newmarket.
Billed as The race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup is a race for three-year-olds and over. Run over a distance of 3,200 metres, is the richest and most prestigious "two-mile" handicap in the world. It is also one of the richest turf races in the world. The event is held at around 3 pm on the first Tuesday in November by the Victoria Racing Club, on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.
The Member's enclosure at Flemington is packed with the rich and famous on race days, all of whom must adhere to a strict dress code. In strict contrast, the Thoroughbred Racing Productions cameramen, equipped with Gigawave digital HD wireless camera systems, were rather conspicuous in their high conspicuity orange jackets.

This year the prize money taken home by the owner of Shocking was A$5 Million. However, next week is the 150th anniversary odf the Melbourne Cup and the prize money will double to A$10 Million. It is also rumoured that HM Queen Elizabeth II will make an appearance.

Viewers Get Bird's Eye View of Airtel T20
The Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) tournament brings together domestic leagues from seven nations as they clash for the top spot in Twenty20 cricket this October in India. The overall prize money the competition offers is a staggering USD six million dollars. The winner will take home USD 2.5 million dollars - the total prize money for the ICC World T20 held in England earlier this year.
The Airtel Champions League T20 cricket tournament took place in Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad, with 'RF Broadcast Solutions' providing three Gigawave HD Clip-on links (with 2 way
diversity receivers) for Flycam Australia.

The 'FlyCam' is a closed loop, stabilized tracking camera system. The aerial camera system is driven by a motor/pulley combination. The drive motor and video receiver are mounted at one end of the run. Video is installed at this end for ease of installment and operation. At the opposite end of the run is a guiding relay pulley. The camera is powered by Lithium Ion batteries. The data commands that control pan, tilt, and paint functions are sent to the camera via a data link, whilst the video is sent via a HD Clip-on links to the OB Truck.

In total, ESPN Star Sport, broadcast 23 games from major cricket grounds in Bangalore, Delhi and Hyderabad. According to Tony Lombaard of ''RF Broadcast Solutions', the 'FlyCam' system and the Gigawave HD Clip-on performed without a single glitch, - not even a refresh.

Police Sport UK on Track for 2010 Season!
The Police Sport UK - Mens Track Team are back home after competing in the National Track Championships. A fith place, in Manchester, was a fitting conclusion to a busy season for both the women's and men's teams and broke new ground for PSUK cycling in terms of races and results.
Despite competing only a limited programme in this their first season, the pursuit team of Dave Baker, Simon Beldon, Steve Legg and Alan Davies rode well to end up in fifth place. A particularly impressive feat considering Steve Legg punctured a tire at half distance and ended riding eight laps with a rapidly deflating rear tyre.

The team were far from disheartened by their performance with Team Captain, Dave Baker saying:

"We now know what we need to do for next year. There's great enthusiasm in the team and we will be back next season with a bigger squad and a bigger programme, that will include the Women's Team Series, National Track Championships, MTB Enduro's and some trips abroad.

In particular, I would like to thank Gigawave and all those that have supported the PSUK team this season."

Gigawave Shares Button's Moment of Glory!
As Jenson Button sat on the grid for the penultimate race of the season, he knew that it would take a miracle for him to clinch the 2009 Formula One World Championship at Interlagos. But miracles happen!

Starting from 14th position after a disastrous qualifying session, Button executed a series of spectacular early overtaking moves to finish the race in fifth place. In doing so Button became Britain's 10th world champion, whilst his team, Brawn/Mercedes pulled off a unique first, winning the constructors' championship in their first season of racing.
Sharing the limelight with Jenson Button at Interlagos were a number of Gigawave digital wireless camera systems which, like Button, are no strangers to the podium. Starting with helix antennas mounted on 'Pit Lane Poles', Gigawave has, over the past twenty years, become synonimous with the live coverage of world championship motorsport events ranging from Formula One to MotoGP.

MVL-HD2 Links Stand up to the Proms
Saturday 12th Sepdember was the culmination of the 114th year of the Proms, which still remains true to its original aim: to present the widest possible range of music, performed to the highest standards, to large audiences

In order to distribute the various feeds to ‘large audiences', SIS LIVE used fully redundant Gigawave MVL-HD2 links from Royal Albert Hall via Crystal Palace to the BBC Television Centre. Primarily, the MVL-HD2 links were used to carry a high definition feed with ‘Dolby E’ audio for the BBC HD Channel, giving viewers the best possible quality.
Coinciding with IBC'09, the story appealed to the producers of IBC Televison News who interviewed SIS LIVE's Operations Manager (Sound & Comms), Nick Buckley in the IBC 'Production Villiage'

Tom Daley is European 10 Metre Diving Champion at 15
At the age of 15, Daley is the world and European 10m platform diving champion. The emotional moment when Tom stepped up onto the podium to receive his gold medal was captured by a Gigawave Wireless Camera System, a familiar sight at FINA events since 2003.
A gold medal for Britain's Tom Daley at the World Diving Championships in Rome

However, Daley's podium smile was in stark contrast to the look of excruciating embarrassment on his face as his tearful father burst into a news conference on Tuesday and demanded a "cuddle" from the new world champion will be familiar to all.

"Yeah, it was quite embarrassing,"
he told BBC 5 Live on Wednesday morning."I could just see him at the back, I could see him starting to cry, and I was like 'Oh dad… what are you doing?'"

Daley's reaction is a reminder that he is, despite everything he has achieved, a typical teenager at heart.Just hours earlier, he had coolly out-performed the world's best divers on his World Championships debut in Rome.

Daley was clearly 'shocked' after winning gold. His final score of 539.85 would have been enough to win him gold at the 2008 Olympics, in Beijing.
It is well known that Gigawave wireless camera systems have been used extensively to cover major international sporting events, including Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, as well as Beijing. However, the D-Cam and D-Cam 'Clip-on' have also been used to cover major international swimming events since the World Championships in Barcelona, back in 2003. Here, for the first time, the Director dispensed with conventional triax cameras in favour or wireless poolside cameras, which were also used to cover the podium presentations.

In all, a total of nine Gigawave Wireless Camera Systems were used to cover the event. Of these, three were supplied by Prestigne Germany to Sudwestrundfunk: three were supplied by Etabeta to FRame, and Italian production company. The Host Broadcaster, RAI, also used three D-Cam 'Clip-on Wireless Camera Systems, in conjunction with Thomson LDK8000 Cameras.

Twenty20 Vision for Twenty20 Cricket Final
England's women are double world champions following a six-wicket win over New Zealand at Lord's, adding the World 'Twenty20' title to the '50-over' crown they won in March. In doing so, they have proved that their World Cup victory in Sydney was no fluke, and have confirmed they are indeed the number one team in the women's game.

England's women cricketers have achieved all of this through a culture of excellence, bred out of Charlotte Edwards's determined leadership, nurtured by coach Mark Lane, and fulfilled by the dedication of a squad of players who have the advantage of feeding off one of the best players the game has seen.

Given the circumstances, it was appropriate that the Team were filmed at the end of the Twenty20 Final by a lone cameraman using a high definition HD D-Cam 'Clip-on' wireless camera system (one of four used for the whole Twenty20 Series). The England Team's culture is remarkably similar to the culture of excellance bred out of Henry Barczynski's determined leadership and the dedication of a dedicated squad of Gigawave engineers who have produced the best wireless camera system the game has seen!.

Gigawave ‘Digital’ Adds a New Meaning to D-Day
A production crew from a UK regional broadcaster, Meridian (ITV), needed a RF channel filter in a hurry and called a member of the Gigawave Sales Team for assistance.

Regional Sales Executive, Raj Kotecha, was not only able to help with the filter, he was able to supply the Meridian crew with the bits and pieces they needed to upgrade their own equipment to a full diversity system, in less than an hour.

The story they were covering was the 65th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. Siobhan Hart, a member of the Meridian crew takes up the story…

“We just wanted to send a massive “thank you” to everyone at Gigawave for helping out with our coverage of the D-Day 65 anniversary in Normandy. The kit you provided to complete our Diversity ‘Digilink’ system gave us far more flexibility than we would have had using our regular ENG kit and really enhanced our programmes.
On the first day, Thursday June 4th, your kit allowed us to do ‘lives’ into Meridian from out across the beaches. Arromanches was part of Gold Beach for the D-Day landings and we were able to operate in amongst the hundreds of people and the vehicles that were re-enacting the scene. Then, on Friday June 5th, our big live programme was from Benouville (better known as ‘Pegasus Bridge’). This was the first place in France to be liberated by a Glider division early on June 6th 1944.

We had an incredibly busy day providing ‘lives’ for both the ITV regions and ITN national news right in to the early hours of the morning. As you can imagine, the place was stuffed full of veterans, military personnel, and tourists. There was no way we could have achieved what we did without your kit!”

All Eyes on the Ball for IPL Cricket Tournament
Concerns surrounding security in India lead organisers of this year’s IPL tournament to seek an alternative host. England had been a possible destination, however favourable and perhaps more dependable weather conditions granted South Africa the honour of hosting the second edition of the IPL cricket tournament, which commenced in Cape Town on 18th April.
Held over 37 days, a total of 59 matches were played across various venues in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, East London, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Kimberley and Bloemfontein. Gigawave's HD Wireless Camera Systems, in conjunction with LDK6000 cameras, comprised the technical elements behind the live broadcasts.

Gigawave high definition wireless camera systems, supplied by Broadcast RF, were Zoom Communications choice for broadcasting live action from multiple venues. A combination of 'Flycam HD RF systems' and HD 'Clip-On' transmitters mounted on LDK8000cameras were used with impressive results. A total of six Gigawave HD ''Clip On Wireless Camera Systems together with four hand held and two Flycam HD RF systems were used across the different venues.

The fierce competition drew to a conclusion on 24th May with The Deccan Chargers completing an impressive season by defeating the Bangalore Royal Challengers by 6 runs and claiming the 2009 IPL Championship in style.

Speaking about the late notice concerning the venue, Cricket South Africa’s chief executive expressed his delight in the choice, saying:

"This is a great compliment to both CSA and our nation, to be shown this confidence in our ability to hold one of the world's top sporting events at short notice.”
*

Although the short notice put demands upon the technical teams involved, Gigawave’s portable options went a long way to ease the pressure and the games were successfully broadcast to millions of appreciative fans around the globe.

TVNZ Extended 'O-Band' Relocation
Faced with having to relocate from the 2.5-2.7GHz Band to the 2.7-2.9GHz Band, TVNZ seized the opportunity to scrap all their analogue equipment and go digital. The result is a brand new newsgathering system that provides live COFDM coverage in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.
The move to what TVNZ engineers refer to as the ‘OX-Band’ was first mooted around 2006. At the time, TVNZ believed they had until 2011 to complete the re-location. So it came as a surprise when the New Zealand Government told them that they had to complete the transition by the end of 2008. In the end, TVNZ were given until June 2009 to complete the work but, unlike the BAS 2GHz Relocation in the United States, TVNZ had to foot the bill.

With just two years to plan and execute the work, TVNZ invited bids from half a dozen vendors of digital microwave equipment. However, only two of the manufacturers had a track record of supplying the required digital microwave equipment in the 2.7-2.9GHz Band. One of these was Gigawave and the Company was subsequently awarded the contract by TVNZ, having carried out a series of rigorous tests in New Zealand.

TVNZ has two free-to-air network channels one of which, TV1, broadcasts six hours of news every day. With most of the news stories centred in the Country’s four largest cities, the Head of Operations - News and Current Affairs for TVNZ, Don Cunningham, decided to establish central COFDM receive sites in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, as well as locating a mobile system in Dunedin.

Auckland has two central receive sites, one of which is mounted high on the ‘Sky’ Tower. This is equipped with Gigawave’s Multi-channel Diversity Receiver (MDR). Camera crews using D-Cam ‘Clip-on’ transmitters operating in the CBD simply beam their reports to the nearest central receive site. However, when out of range (using the standard CP Omni antenna) the camera crew can extend the range using an external 2W power amplifier and a Hand Held Helix antenna.

For more extensive news coverage and other outside broadcasts, the news team can call on ‘Live Eye 1’, a mobile production unit based on a Mercedes ‘Sprinter’ chassis. Live Eye 1 is also equipped with a 12 metre (40’) mast as well as a 5W power amplifier and a directional helix antenna. With eight ASI inputs, the truck can be configured to work with triax and/or wireless cameras. Currently, Wellington and Christchurch both have single central receive sites. TVNZ news crews operating in Wellington can cover downtown, the Parliament building, and city-centre sports stadiums using only a standard D-Cam ‘Clip-on’.

Don Cunningham who is currently in the UK to carry out factory acceptance tests is “Excited by the new technology” and the freedom it gives his news teams. Above all, it allows TV1 news editors to include a high proportion of live ‘stand-ups’ in their extensive news reports – and that, as far as Don Cunningham is concerned, is what it’s all about!

Latest HD Technology Captures Ancient Chinese Ceremony
Cutting edge Gigawave HD technology enabled the live CCTV broadcast of the ancient Ancestor Worship Ceremony, which took place in China on Sunday 29th March 2009.

Traditionally hosted in Xinzheng, the birthplace of Emperor Huangdi, situated in central China's Henan Province, this magnificent event commemorates the birthday of the Yellow Emperor; widely recognized as the legendary ancestor of the Chinese nation.

Xuanyuan Huangdi has been the symbol of Chinese Civilization for thousands of years and is viewed by many, to represent a common desire for the reunification of the nation. More than 10,000 people from around the world attended the event, many returning to worship and explore their cultural roots in China. The meticulously planned event was a great success and was recorded for posterity by China Central Television using Gigawave HD technology.

A total of eight Gigawave HD Links were used, ranging from typical point to point HD links, to the use of a moving vehicle which relayed incoming HD signals and simultaneously conveyed the original signals to various relay points. A HD Wireless Camera mounted on the back of a motorbike was in the heart of the action, transmitting to the moving tracking vehicle.

Gigawave’s ultra modern technology allowed a ceremony steeped in ancient tradition to be broadcast seamlessly across all of China. Proof that with the right technology, old and new don’t so much collide, as work in harmony together.

Close up and Personal
Gigawave HD technology enabled Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard to ‘reach out’ to thousands of fans around the world, with his memorable ‘camera-kiss’ during a recent Barclays Premiere League match against Manchester United.

Liverpool's Captain, Steven Gerrard, first kissed his shirt before racing up to the Sky Sports sideline cameraman, in front of hundreds of cheering Liverpool fans, to kiss his camera lens.

Gerrard’s memorable kiss came just before half time, after his successful conversion of a penalty kick took Liverpool into the lead. This was followed up in the second half by goals from Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena, giving Merseysiders their biggest win on Manchester United soil since 1936.

Liverpool needed the win at Old Trafford to keep them in the hunt for the Barclays Premiere League title. However, the team got off to a poor start against their famous rivals, after Christiano Ronaldo scored the first goal of the match from the penalty spot. Fernando Torres managed to equalise for Liverpool, but it took Steven Gerrard’s well documented goal to give the team their first taste of victory and turn the match around.

According to Sky Sports commentator, Richard Keys, the game was "watched in 600 million homes in 200 countries!" If these figures are to be believed, the the Gigawave D-Cam HD equipped camera, played a vital part in enabling millions of fans to get up close and personal with their team’s ecstatic captain.

The Gigawave D-Cam HD system (operating at 3.5GHz) was docked with a Thomson LDK 6000 camera, both of which were supplied to Sky Sports by Presteigne Charter London.

Tour de Langkawi Goes Digital
The Tour de Langkawi is an annual cycling race which is held in Malaysia since 1996. The name of the event comes from the starting point of the early races, held in Langkawi, Kedah, although some later editions did not include Langkawi in the race at all. The race is part of the UCI Asia Tour.
Live coverage of this year’s Tour de Langkawi was provided by Malaysian facilities company, Visual 3 using Gigawave D-Cam equipped motos.

Visual 3, who have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with the state broadcaster, RTM, chose Gigawave microwave links because of their superior performance. During final stages of the race, live images were transmitted to a Gigawave 4-way Diversity Receiver at the top of the 335 metre KL Tower. This vantage point provided unbroken coverage of downtown KL including one section wher the race went through a tunnel.

The Winter X Games is the premier annual winter action sports event in the world, featuring athletes from across the globe competing for medals and prize money in sports such as Skiing, Snowboarding and Snowmobile. This year the games were held on Buttermilk Mountain, Aspen, Colorado.
Gigawave was chosen by Total RF for this project because of Gigawave’s understanding and experience in all action sports from Moto GP to surfing and the long relationship between the two companies.

With the brief to increase the viewing spectacle of the X Games for the viewer at home, Gigawave set out to design and manufacture a new Ski Follow Cam. This system allows a cameraman to follow the competitors on the slopes whilst being in full control of the zoom and focus of the camera. The footage is transmitted live from the camera operator who is fully independent and free from cables.

The speed in which the Ski Cam was designed and manufactured illustrates Gigawave’s expertise and imagination in specialised camera solutions.

Super League Comes To Essex
The inaugural Super League Formula season was a great success in terms of the racing, the television spectacle and the organisation, surprising many other better established motor sport series.
The new formula which sees the top football teams from around the world, fight on the track as well as on the pitch. Attracting such names like Liverpool FC, AS Roma, Galatasaray and Flamengo, the series started with its own existing fan base.

The off season does not always mean a holiday for those working on the series and the Gigawave on-board team have been working hard, making sure all their camera and transmitter systems are checked and upgraded for a new season of racing.
Gigawave have also used the off season as a chance to develop their on-board technology with the use of the Glasgow Rangers car that is currently at their Earls Colne headquarters in Essex.
Head of On Boards, Ashley Jackson comments; "Having access to this car without any time pressures allows us to test and develop new ideas that we have had throughout the season. We are always looking to perfect our systems and keep us ahead of the game.

These cars were actually designed with the Gigawave equipment in mind so there are dedicated areas within the car that house our cameras and transmitters perfectly, that just shows how pivotal Gigawave’s technology is to new racing series"
